Hi Glreeg
Do you know how many of our sins were still in the future when Christ went to the cross? ALL of them.
Our sinful behaviors were learned, over time, hammered into us by a fallen world that we were born into. Your salvation through Christ our Lord was instantaneous, when you accepted Him into your heart, but the saved behavior must be taught, at a rate that you can handle. You are a work in progress - being remolded, out of the shape the world molded you into. God knows we are only clay. Be still, but unafraid. Let God be God.
As you rattle off continuous requests for forgiveness, like a mantra... stop just a moment. THANK Him for the forgiveness that was already purchased on your behalf by Jesus. If that sacrifice was not sufficient, then He did it for nothing, right? Forgiving yourself is an important step – it may be THAT guilt that keeps you in bondage as well. Sometimes we don't feel worthy by some set of imagined standards in our mind's eye... and so we feel worthless, and not able to accept His forgiveness and love... and patience, as we go through the remolding process.
I remember this story, that has always impressed me: A little boy fell out of a tree and broke his arm. The doctor arrived. The boy was afraid of what the doctor was going to do to his already broken arm. The doctor said, "Do you want your arm fixed?"
The boy said "yes."
"Well," the doctor said, "I can fix your arm... but it will hurt just for a while, as I fix it. Can you handle a little pain now, and get your arm fixed?"
The boy thought about it, and became brave for the doctor to do his job.
We are that little boy. God is the doctor. |
