Christian relief efforts in Chechnya

“We haven’t seen the light for two years,” moans a Chechen woman. “It is impossible to live here under the bullets,” moans another. Civilian Chechens are growing more despondent as war rages on. They do not trust the separatist guerrillas or the Russian troops. The common citizens caught in the middle of the war have no defense and nowhere to appeal for help. Civilians are being destroyed as brutally as the buildings and infrastructure.

Though it is a small step to alleviate the suffering of the Chechen people, there are at least two Christian organizations that are trying to provide food, medicine, and other relief to these suffering people in the name of Jesus.

Pray for the efforts of the Southern Baptists and for Accelerating International Mission Strategies (AIMS) as they attempt to give aid to the suffering, and to glorify the Suffering Servant. Pray that Christians in Chechnya will have the willingness to serve and sacrifice for His sake. Pray that the Holy Spirit will tear down spiritual barriers to the gospel. Pray for a hastening of the production and distribution of the Bible in the Chechen language. Pray that by God’s power and wisdom, there will be lasting peace, justice, and political stability to Chechnya which will lift the spirit of oppression resulting from constant war and destruction.—PB

Judges 4:4

“Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was leading Israel at that time.”
While many today struggle over the question of what role women should play in the church, the example of Deborah reminds us that in times of crisis, women often give strong leadership. From the early days of Protestant missions, women have carried tremendous responsibilities in overseas service and mission administration. Many times, in areas where men could not (or would not) go, women have taken the gospel to peoples who would otherwise never have had the opportunity to hear. They have shared the work, the joys, and the rewards. Accounts of missionary successes justly include the deeds of many capable women.

Dear Lord, use Your daughters today also to provide leadership in bringing blessing to the families of the earth.

Dear Lord, please help to bring relief to Chechnya. Let this be one of many necessary steps to achieve World Peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with those in all war-torn countries. Please help the people of the world to remember the second part of that famous phrase: "...divided we fall."

Your pal,
Erin
